Environmental Protection and

 Sustainable Development in West China

 

INVITATION

An International Symposium on Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development in West China, will be held in Xi'an, China, in May 21-23, 2004 .

This symposium is organized by Associations for Science & Technology of 3 provinces (Shaanxi, Gansu and Qinghai) and 3 autonomous regions (Xinjiang, Ningxia and Inner Mongolia) in the northwest region of China, and supported by China Association for Science and Technology (CAST). With The Environmental Problems and the Sustainability in the Process of the Development in the West Arid and Semi-arid Areas as the theme, the symposium is expecting about 200 participants from home and abroad. Some internationally well-known experts are invited as the key speakers to address at the plenary session. The main subjects of parallel sessions include the exploitation in the arid and semi-arid areas; the industrial development in the west; the environmental protection and sustainability issues in the agriculture modernization; the prevention and control of natural disasters; the development of the environment protection industry; and the opportunities and the challenges caused by the west development and the new issues occurred after China's accession into WTO.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

    The Organizing Committee has the pleasure to invite the contributions to the conference for either oral or poster presentations. The accepted abstracts will be collected into the Abstract Book. Abstracts offered for presentation should preferably be related to the following topics:

  • 1.The ecology and environment protection and the Project of Green Mountain and Clear River;

  • 2.The ecology and environment construction on the Loess Plateau;

  • 3.The sustainable exploitation and utilization of water resources;

  • 4.The research, prevention and control of the sandstorm;

  • 5.The research, prevention and control of the desert and wilderness;

  • 6.The sustainable exploitation and utilization of tourism resources, natural landscape and humanity historic relic resources.

Abstract Instructions

   The abstracts should be written in English. The text can be prepared by using any common variant of Windows 95/98/2000 and Microsoft Word 97/2000.  Please use single space with the font of Times New Roman 12 only, and make the abstract on a laser or ink-jet printer for the sharp image.  The entire abstract should fit into the box (all margins 0.5 cm), and figures should be sent preferably in any common graphical format such as JPG, TIF, GIFEPS and BMP, and be formatted as follows:

  • Title: Use boldface, with initial letter in capital.

  • Author: Start on a new line. Underline the name of the presenting author. Do not include degree or professional title. The order is first name, middle name initials and last name, such as Yubin Liu, Lars-Erik j. Berk, Guy M. Courbebaisse.

  • Affiliation: Start on a new line. Include affiliation, mailing address, state, zip code and country. Leave a blank line after the affiliation.

  • Text: Use a single paragraph. It is no more than 250 words totally.

  • Abbreviations may be used. Give the full term when first mentioned, followed by the abbreviation in parenthesis.

SYMPOSIUM   INFORMATION

Symposium Venue

    60 minutes drive from Xi'an International Airport and 10 minutes to the downtown area.

Official Language

     The official language is English.

Facilities Available

    Standard projectors for 35 mm slides, videotape players (MPEG or MPG) and multimedia LCD projectors (PowerPoint) will be available in all meeting rooms. A Rehearsal Room is open during the Symposium.

Please complete the Registration Form and return it to secretary before April 1, 2004. It is expected that at least one author per abstract will register for the Symposium. Your Registration Form should be accompanied with relevant payment.

GENERAL  INFORMATION

The City

Xi'an, as the capital of Shaanxi Province, is unique in history, tradition and characteristics. It was once the capital of several successive feudal dynasties for more than 1000 years, there locate a lot of historical and humanity relics, such as the Terra-cotta Warriors and the City Wall, the Wild Goose Pagoda. 

Passport and Visa

A valid passport and visa for visiting China are required. Upon receiving your Registration Form, Symposium secretary will send you an official invitation letter with which you can apply for an entry visa at the Chinese Embassy or the nearest Consulate General.

Weather

May in Xi'an is comfortable and nice. The average daily temperature is about 24 (75°F), with the highest at around 28 (82°F)and lowest at around 20  (68°F).

Insurance

  The registration fee does not include insurance for the participants regarding accidents, sickness or loss of personal property. It is advisable that participants make their own arrangements in respect of health and travel insurance before leaving their countries.

Electricity

 The electricity supplied is 220V, 50Hz in China.

Currency Exchange

RMB is the only currency used in China. However, exchange centers can be found at airports, most hotels and large shopping centers, also at the Symposium venue. Visa, Master, American Express, Diners Club and JCB are accepted in many department stores and hotels. It may be difficult to draw cash with credit cards. The Bank of China and most hotels can cash travelers checks issued by any foreign bank or financial institution.
